Gosport is a fairly grim place, all in all, with the military presence and the general run-down feel, but there are some great views from the extensive coastline, and some fine 19th century buildings and forts. This view is towards Portsdown Hill.

Hi Duncan, not normally one to post, but I think grim is a bit of a strong word to use about Gosport! There are a few nice places to visit here, as well as some not so nice, but that’s the nature of most towns I believe. ‘It’s grim’, please elaborate?
Grim as in entire roads lined with barbed wire fences, several wastelands with redevelopment frozen or taking years, the old station in ruins, traffic queues taking over 45 minutes to leave the peninsular (7 miles), a general run-down feeling in the high street, 1960s tower blocks. Yes, like many town with added no-go military areas. The sea front is pleasant and some of the streets around that area. I know ‘grim’ isn’t compatible with the hotel industry. The places to visit aren’t grim but the general feeling was, in my opinion.
